John Ryan House was build c. 1900. John played a peripheral role in the mercantile firm Ryan Brothers, a firm that has considerable operations in Bonavista, Trinity and King's Cove. John either did not aspire to be part of the management of the firm along with brothers Edmund, Dan and James or was simply regarded as not up to the task as family correspondence can be quoted saying "tis hard to find a job he would like". At one point he was dismissed from the firm and operated as a barber before rejoining the firm in 1910. The large two story gable roof structure was most likely built by Joseph Strathie as it is identical in form to the Trembett House. The home been totally restored on the outside and the inside, albeit in two apartments, still retains all of its original trim and outstanding staircase that runs from the main floor to the attic. Viewers will be intrigued with the spiral construction of the chimneys in the space between the attic floor and ridge. Folklore tells is that this is a "witches crook" preventing the crackle from the evil witch from permeating the residence. Who would have known that witches only fly straight and that the spiral bend would prevent their presence at the dinner table. It could be that the mason may have incorporated this design in order to aim the chimneys through the roof ridge.
